Ahead of International Women’s Day, the Centre for Women’s Studies at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Student Cultural Centre of the University of Rijeka invite you to a screening of the documentary film Šume šume, directed by Renata Poljak, followed by a discussion about the film, on Tuesday, 3 March at 6 p.m. at InovaLab (Radmile Matejčić 2, University Campus).
The discussion will feature Professor Mila Orlić, Full Professor at the Department of History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Dr Iva Jelušić, whose research focuses particularly on women’s and gender history and the history of feminism in the socialist countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
Šume šume (2024, 68 min) is a documentary by Croatian director Renata Poljak structured around four stories – the testimonies of women Partisans. Nanica (18), who died during the war, left behind a diary. Marija (87) gave an audio interview several years ago and we therefore encounter her through her voice, while Hilda (105) and Zdenka (96) speak passionately on camera about their wartime and post-war experiences.
The discussion with Mila Orlić and Iva Jelušić will be inspired in part by the film and by the role and position of women in the People’s Liberation War and the post-war period. It will also address the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations at Rijeka’s Night March, entitled No Antifascism Without Women, as well as contemporary antifascism, women’s perspectives on these issues, and women’s contribution to building a society based on solidarity and equality.
The discussion will be moderated by Jelena Androić, a member of the Centre for Women’s Studies. Admission is free.
